Cause of Explosion in South China Determined

Police have determined on Thursday that Monday's explosion in a water tunnel of south China's Gaohu Reservoir was caused by a bomb planted by local people angry about a controversial water diverting project.

Six people near the tunnel at the time of the blast died from suffocation, said police in Puning City, Guangdong Province.

The water diverting project, built by Daping township government, is located on the border of Daping and the township of Shuichun, whose residents oppose the plan.

Shuichun residents worried that the project would negatively affect the township's irrigation and the hydro-electric power generating.

The criminal case, which has drawn concern from the provincial government, is under intensive investigation.
