China, Kyrgyzstan Vow to Fight Separatism, Terrorism, Extremism
The two countries made the pledge during a meeting between Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Kyrgyzstan President Askar Akayev, who are here for the annual summit meeting of the " Shanghai Five" nations. During their meeting, Jiang said that since China and Kyrgyzstan share a common position on fighting separatism, terrorism and extremism, the two countries should continue to support each other and cooperate with each other more closely to this effect. He said that China fully supports Akayev's proposal for establishing an international anti-terrorism center within the framework of the "Shanghai Five" summit. The setting up of the center is not only in the fundamental interests of the two countries, but also is conducive to maintaining peace and stability of the region, he said. Akayev expressed his gratitude to China for firmly supporting Kyrgyzstan's efforts to crack down on terrorist activities and Kyrgyzstan's proposal of setting up the international anti- terrorism center. He also said that the signing of a border pact among Kyrgyzstan, China, and Tajikistan on Wednesday was an important event in the region. Agreeing with him, Jiang said that the signing of the pact reflected the firm determination of the three countries to strengthen their good-neighborly friendship and cooperation. | |
