China's Artistic Pilgrimage

Modern Chinese make a pilgrimage to rather than visit the Dunhuang Art Exhibition, which opened on July 4 in downtown Beijing.

Four full-size replicas of the most famous Dunhuang caves in northwest China's Gansu Province have been set up at the world's largest-ever show on Dunhuang art at the Museum of Chinese History.

After a half-year of refurbishment, the museum saw flocks of people braving a summer storm on July 4 to show their enthusiasm about Dunhuang art and its studies.

Academic circles regard the exhibition as the most outstanding art show on Dunhuang.

The exhibits include four full-size replicas of Dunhuang caves, copies of 30 murals, ten copies of figurines, 14 authentic sutras and ten sutra copies, six genuine paintings and 44 reproductions, as well as more than 80 photographs of Dunhuang relics preserved both at home and abroad.

In addition, the Dunhuang Academy arranged with many museums in other countries to borrow Dunhuang documents they are preserving, and sometimes replicas.

More than 50,000 cultural relics from the Library Cave are spread throughout the world, with Russia having 19,000 pieces and Britain maintaining 13,000.
