Cosmic Ray Research Center Being Built in Tibet

A modern cosmic ray research center is being built at Yangbajain Township in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The center, located in the existing cosmic ray observation center, is a joint venture by China and Italy. China invested 30 million yuan in the project while Italy provided 6 million US dollars.

When the center starts operation at the end of this year, it will use new detectors to observe cosmic rays, which will collect more data than conventional observation equipment.

The observation center, the only one in China, was set up by Chinese and Japanese scientists in 1989. Yangbajain is considered the best spot for cosmic ray observation in the world as it stands at 4,000 meters above sea level.

The center has increased its number of detectors from 49 in 1989 to the present 527.
