Wei Jianxing on Transparency of Grassroots Gvt WorkA Chinese party leader has urged town and township officials to increase transparency of government work and promote democracy, so as to boost rural reform and stability.Wei Jianxing, Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party Central Committee, made the remark during his study tour in Tianjin, 100 km east of Beijing, from July 2-4. Wei, who is mainly responsible for the Party's disciplinary issues, visited Baodi County, Tianjin, and talked with local officials and ordinary people on promoting grassroots democracy and openness of government work. Highlighting the importance of the issue, Wei urged all localities nationwide to participate in the effort. The transparency plan should be combined with the strengthening of internal supervision and management, so that any officials who attempt to sidestep the rules with illegal activities will be discovered, he said. He noted the trickle-down effect of the work, saying that boosting transparency of grassroots government work can lead to the improvement of village level operations.
