China Faces Typhoon ThreatsChina faces more attacks by typhoon this year, officials at meteorological and oceanic departments have predicted.Three to five disastrous storms may take place in the coastal areas, according to a national meeting on typhoon prevention held here recently. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has urged local government officials to reinforce dikes and reservoirs and keep a close watch on tropic cyclones. The headquarters has also sounded warnings about the simultaneous attacks of wind, storm and tide. China is prone to typhoon attacks. Every year, about eight typhoons visited the country. The meeting revealed that 56 percent of 13,580-kilometer-long seawalls in the country have not reached the standard, and ten percent of 328 coastal cities or counties are short of telecommunications facilities. Over the past three years, Zhejiang Province in east China and other coastal regions have done a lot on flood prevention projects. Before flood season this year, more than 98 percent of the coastal cities and counties have set up systems to receive satellite cloud pictures.
