Macao Telecom to Provide Broadband Internet AccessIn the near future, Macao residents will be able to surf the Internet 30 times faster than they do at present. The Macao Telecommunications Company (CTM) announced at a press conference Tuesday that it would officially launch a faster broadband service at the end of this month. With the application of Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line, the broadband service is based on a newly constructed network using high-performance switches and network infrastructure from the Cisco Systems Inc. The new service will enable network users to enjoy 1.5-megabyte- per-second access to the Internet, almost 30 times faster than the current 56-kilobyte-per-second modems. What's more, customers can use the same telephone line to make phone calls and access Internet services simultaneously. CTM targets to provide the broadband service in 90 percent of the region by the end of the year. And then, e-billing, e-payment and e-shopping will be introduced to provide a variety of on-line services to Macao residents. CTM started to provide Internet services in 1995 and the company boasts direct access connecting Macao with China's Hong Kong, inland areas and Taiwan, Singapore, Portugal, Canada and the United States.
