Reunification Is Only Way to Guarantee Taiwan's Security: Chinese Paper

Taiwan's safety is not guaranteed as long as the island refuses to reunify with China, China's most important military paper warned Monday.

"Taiwan's security won't be guaranteed if unification is not achieved. A unified and strong motherland is always a reliable guarantee to Taiwan's security," the People's Liberation Army Newspaper said in a front-page article.

The commentary also reminded Taiwan that China has a timetable for unification with Taiwan, aiming to counter the appearance of a lack of timeline.

"The new leader of Taiwan should be concerned with the security and happiness of 23 million Taiwanese people and to be fully aware of the situation and reign in the horse at the brink of the cliff," the commentary said.

"He should return to the one-China principle as quickly as possible and make the right choice soon on the issue of peaceful reunification."

The article warned that any Taiwanese leader who "does not concern himself with people's welfare is doomed to be shortlived."

China considers the island an inseparable part of China which must be reunified, by force if necessary.
