Hi-tech Zones Promote Economic Growth in E. China Province

The ten major new and high tech development zones in east China's Shandong Province have become a driving force behind local economic growth.

The ten zones currently have more than 10,000 enterprises, turning out 5.5 billion yuan in taxes and profits last year, government officials said.

In the port city of Qingdao, new and high tech zones contribute 15 percent to the city's gross domestic product.

Exports from new and high tech zones in Weihai accounted for a quarter of the coastal city's total.

Shandong started building new and high tech development zones in Yantai, Qingdao, Weihai and other cities 10 years ago.

To date, the zones have attracted more than 10,000 talented people and made a number of inventions.

Meanwhile, foreign investors have come to invest in more than 1, 000 projects with exports surpassing US$ 700 million.

More than 400 business incubators have been set up, after the management committees of the zones began to carry out co-operation with more than 200 Chinese and foreign colleges and research institutions, the officials said.
