Over 10 Super Bookstores Set Up in China

More than 10 super bookstores have come into shape in the increasingly competitive book markets of China, according to a publishing forum held on July 4.

The super bookstores all boast over 10,000 varieties of books, over 5,000 square meters of business space, and good facilities and services.

Official figures show that Book City in Shanghai, which opened in December 1998, was visited last year by more than 2.4 million customers, who bought over 115 million yuan-worth of books.

The Beijing Book Center in downtown Beijing sold over 140 million yuan-worth of books last year. Its sales for the first half of this year went up 50 percent to 98 million yuan-worth.

For the better use of resources and to reduce business risks, the super bookstores negotiated and formed an alliance at the end of last year.

Under the terms of the alliance, the bookstores will unify book classifications and data banks, and collectively purchase business facilities.
