Peru, China Trade Grows

Trade between Peru and China went up to US$196.08 million during year 2000's first four months, said Monday Economic Promotion Office of Foreign Relations Ministry (OPE).

The office predicted that by December, year 2000, trade between both countries will widely go over 1999's indexes, placing Peru as China's sixth trading partner in the region, after Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Panama and Mexico.

According to Office of Economic Promotion, during 1999 trade exchange between Peru and the Asian giant came to US$466.95 million.

China's investment in Peru boosted considerably with the purchase of state company Peru Steel, on behalf of China consortium Shougang Corp., which increased by 120 million dollars Asia's presence in this country.

In Peru there are 22 Chinese firms that have carried through big investments in different areas of Peru's economy.
