More Old Stone Age Animal Fossils Discovered in Three Gorges AreaChinese archaeologists have discovered a batch of animal fossils and stone tools dating 100, 000 years ago during a recent excavation in the Three Gorges area in southwestern China. The discovery was made at an Old Stone Age site at Jingshuiwan, Fengdu County, which covers more than 3,000 square meters. Experts from the ancient vertebrates and human beings research institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences believed that the animal fossils belong to deer, ox, stegodon, tapir and others. They said that it is rare to discover animal fossils in south China, because acid soil there is detrimental to animal skeletons. Fossilized deer and stegodon were also found in the area last year. More than 400 stone tools unearthed there include cores, flakes, choppers, scrapers and pointed implements. |
