Japan's Mori Re-elected Prime Minister
Japan's House of Representatives re-elected Yoshiro Mori as prime minister Tuesday afternoon, paving the way for the formation of a new cabinet later in the day.
Mori won the premiership vote with the support of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the party's two junior coalition partners, the New Komeito party and the New Conservative Party.
Mori's victory in the lower house means he has been effectively re-elected Japan's prime minister as the country's constitutional provisions stipulate that the lower house's election result stands even if the House of Councilors, the upper house, elects a different candidate as prime minister.
Mori was also expected to win approval in the upper house as the three-party coalition also enjoys a comfortable majority in the upper chamber. Voting there was scheduled to take place shortly after the lower house vote.
The parliamentary votes were held on the first day of a three-day special Diet (parliament) session following the June 25 general election.
The lineup for Mori's new cabinet is expected to be announced around 6.30 p.m. (0930 GMT).
