More Jobs for Women in Shanghai

Gong Xueping, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, called upon the society to give equal employment opportunities to laid-off women and offer legal aid to those who want to start their own business.

"The women's organizations at different levels should encourage and guide them to initiate their new careers," Gong was quoted by today's China Daily as saying.

The city has worked out a plan to help 30,000 laid-off women find new jobs annually, said Meng Yankun, chairwoman of the Shanghai Women's Federation.

Under the federation's plan, Meng said, the city will train 600 women to be managers each year and help them run enterprises so that more laid-off women can be re-employed.

She said laid-off women in the city now have gradually gotten rid of their dependence on large enterprises and State-owned institutions to find new jobs.

"Many are beginning to look for jobs at job centers," Meng said.

City officials said that more careers should be expanded so that more job opportunities can be created.
