Yugoslavia Determined to Protect National Sovereignty, Says FM

National unity, self-reliance and strengthened cooperation with the outside world are the important factors that guarantee the victory in the Yugoslav fight for national sovereignty and reconstruction, said Foreign Minister Zivadin Jovanovic Monday.

Jovanovic was speaking at a ceremony for a major highway bridge to open to traffic. The bridge, connecting Belgrade and the Nish highway, was destroyed during NATO's 78-day air strikes against Yugoslavia last year.

He noted that the bridge is a monument of victories for builders over destroyers, civilization over brutality, and humanism over barbarism.

With the bridge open to traffic, all the bridges in Yugoslavia connecting with European Expressway 75, that had been destroyed during NATO bombings, had been rebuilt, he said.

Jovanovic also said that Yugoslavia will continue to pursue a foreign policy of peace and cooperation. It will firmly protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, rebuild the homeland and continue the reforms.

Hegemonism and power politics are not in line with the interests of the people in the Balkans, and only exchanges and cooperation will contribute to peace and stability in Europe, Jovanovic said.
