International Community Welcomes Mexican Election's Result
The international community congratulated Monday Vicente Fox on his "historic" victory at Mexican presidential elections.
Hours after provisional results were known that give as winner Vicente Fox, the United States, Spain, Cuba, and Brazil, among other countries, expressed their satisfaction about how elections were carried out in Mexico.
U.S. President Bill Clinton congratulated Fox, conservative presidential candidate, on his victory and invited him to visit Washington after assuming power, next December 1.
Fox, the candidate of the National Action Party, broke a 71-year rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Fox had campaigned on promises to fight corruption, improve education and help the poor.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar spoke Monday by phone with Fox, head of the National Action Party(PAN), to congratulate him on what he considers a "triumph of democracy" and to express his trust in keeping excellent bilateral relations existing between Spain and Mexico.
European Commission, executive body of European Union (EU), congratulated Mexico's leader on his "historic victory" and expressed trust in supposing the start of a relation of cooperative cooperation.
Brazil's President, Fernando Henrique Cardoiso, expressed his congratulation "to Fox and to the Mexican people" "for the serenity and democratic maturity exemplarily shown at this unique moment in its history".
According to partial, preliminary returns from the Mexican presidential election, with 93 percent of precincts reporting, Vicente Fox, National Action Party got 42.8 percent of votes; Francisco Labastida of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party 35.7 percent; Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, of the left-wing Democratic Revolution Party 16.5 percent.
The ruling Institutional Revolution Party has governed the Latin American country of 97.4 million people for 71 years.
