China Lands Third Place in Women's Gold Cup

China beat Canada 2-1 to earn third place in the inaugural Women's Gold Cup football tournament Monday in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Qiu Haiyan scored in the 73rd minute. Canadian goalkeeper Nicky Wright came off her line sluggishly, and neither she nor two Canadian defenders could control the ball, leaving Qiu to grab her second goal of the tournament.

Jin Yan had given China a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute through an assist from Shui Qingxia.

Charmaine Hooper converted a penalty in the 58th as the Canadians made the 1999 Women's World Cup runners-up work hard for the consolation victory.

The match was the curtain-raiser to the eight-nation tournament's final, between the United States and Brazil.
