Slovak Prime Minister Assumes Presidential Power

The Slovak government on Monday entrusted Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda with executing presidential powers at its special meeting based on a medical report about ailing President Rudolf Schuster, the Czech News Agency reported.

Under Slovakia's constitution, in the event that the president is unable to perform his duties, his power is transferred to the government and parliament chairman.

Schuster, 66, underwent two "life-saving" emergency operations after he was hospitalized on June 14 with a high fever. Later, due to his deteriorating condition, Schuster was transferred to Austria to receive an emergency treatment last Wednesday.

According to the latest information, his life is no longer in danger, but the condition still remains serious. Schuster was elected president last year.
