Shanghai Port Achieves Historical Breakthrough

Fast statistics show that Shanghai Port made another historical breakthrough by handling more than 100 million tons of cargoes in the first half of this year, up 11.9 percent over the same period of last year and exceeding the total handling capacity of 1984.

In the first half of this year, all of the three indexes of cargo handling capacity, external trade capacity and container handling capacity of Shanghai Port set new historical records. External trade handling capacity increased by 24 percent over the same period last year. Container handling capacity reached 2.56 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent containers), surged 33 percent.

Since it started container transportation business in 1978, Shanghai Port has maintained a rapid development. Currently, the container handling capacity of Shanghai Port accounts for 23.3 percent of the total capacity of coastal ports in China's mainland and develops at an average annual rate of 30 percent increase. Last year, the international container handling capacity of Shanghai Port exceeded 4 million TEUs, ranking among the top seven of the world. It is said that the target of container handling capacity of Shanghai Port this year is to top 5 million TEUs, an increase of over 1 million TEUs a year.
