Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party Wins General Election

The opposition Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP), led by Nambaryn Enkhbayar, won the Mongolian State Great Khural (parliament) election held on Sunday, clinching 72 of the total 76 seats contested.

With 96,000 members, the MPRP is Mongolia's largest political party.

About 75.8 percent of the voters cast their ballots.

The ruling Mongolian National Democratic Party (MNDP) gained only one seat and another ruling party, the Mongolian Social-Democratic Party (MSDP) has nobody entering the parliament.

The Party of Civic Courage, the Mongolian Democratic New Socialist Party and an independent candidate each obtained one of the remaining three seats, according to an official of the MPRP's press office.

The MPRP had been in power for 75 years until its defeat in the 1996 polls, which sent it into opposition for the first time in the party's history.
