Survey Into Sea Waters Near Pearl River Estuary

A comprehensive survey of the marine environment near the Pearl River estuary, a Sino-Japanese governmental cooperation project, has been launched in south China 's Guangdong Province.

The Pearl River estuary and its nearby waters have become some of the worst-polluted sea waters in China. Due to a shortage of funds for the work, the problem has long gone un-checked.

According to the new agreement, the Japanese government will contribute 20 million yuan (about 2.41 million U.S. dollars) to the survey project.

The survey will take two years to finish, according to members of the survey team.

The survey is to determine the nature and scope of anti- pollution measures necessary in the estuary area.
