Appraisal of "China's Nobel Prize" Underway

The appraisal of China's first 5-million yuan (about 600,000 US dollars) State Supreme Science and Technology Award, or "China's Nobel Prize", is underway in Beijing, a senior official of the Ministry of Science and Technology said in Beijing Monday.

The official said the appraisal committee of the State Supreme Science and Technology Award has received recommending documents for 14 candidates.

He said the appraisal committee is expected to announce the final results by the end of this year.

According to the newly implemented regulations of the state science and technology awards, no more than two Chinese scientists, are chosen each year to be the winners of the State Supreme Science and Technology Award. And the State president is to confer the prizes and certificates for the winners.

The official said the primary appraisals of the State Natural Science Award, State Technological Innovation Award and the State Science and Technology Advancement Award have been completed at the end of last month.

He said, the first prize for the natural science award and technological innovation award have been vacant for the third successive year.

He said nearly 1,000 appraising experts have chosen from 884 programs 330 programs as candidates for above three science awards.

He said the State Science and Technology Awards Office will announce the primary appraisal results of the three awards on Science and Technology Daily and a scientific and technological data bank system (http//db.sti.ac.cn) Tuesday, and supervision from all walks of life is welcome.
