Amendment of Customs Law Emphasizes Fight against Smugglers

The latest draft amendment to China's Customs Law will help China strengthen the crack-down on smuggling-related crimes and reinforce the protection of copyrights.

The draft was submitted to the 16th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top law-making body today for deliberation.

In his explanation to the meeting on the draft, Zhou Keyu, vice-chairman of NPC Law Committee, said that a rewarding system will be introduced to encourage the general public to inform the Customs and police of smuggling activities.

To ensure effective crack-down on smuggling-related crime, the draft stipulates that the local governments and departments shall not interfere in the customs law enforcement.

Zhou Keyu said that putting the protection of copyrights as an integral part of the country's Customs Law is of vital necessity. Any products that infringe upon the copyrights shall be confiscated and fined and criminal liability shall be pursued when necessary.
