Heartfelt Wish of a Veteran Party Member
On the eve of the 79th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC), We're lucky to hear a special Party lecture given by General Lu Zhengcao, a 96 year-old revolutionary with a 63 years' Party standing.
A magnifier in hand, elderly Lu read the article "Great Cause Needs Great Spirit" published on People's Daily, while he talked glowingly about the fine traditions and work style of the Communist Party of China and recalled the arduous but glorious course it traversed in those days.
He said with deep feeling: "Our Party has over 63 million members, equivalent to a medium-sized country in terms of population. The crux of the matter at present is to raise the quality of the Party members. Some Party members don't know which country Marx is from and what Marxism is. What's the purpose of one's joining the Party? Be it for the purpose of getting an official position?" he said excitedly that some rural officials have nothing to do all day but live on the labor of the common people.
Lu's untiring and earnest instruction fully shows a senior Party member's deep feeling for the Party and his special concern about real life.
Following the deep thought of elderly Lu, I couldn't help remembering those eventful years of the Party's birth, development and growth in strength. Some 79 years have passed, in the changeable age and world, the Communist Party of China has developed from small to big and from weak to strong, and from a membership of only several dozens at the beginning to a big party with a membership of more than 63 million. As a member of the Party, I am proud of the development and growth of the Party; as Chinese, I earnestly realize this truth that without the Communist Party, there would have been no new China, no prosperity and strength of China and the happiness and health of the people.
The instruction of elderly Lu has enabled me to calmly ponder over such an issue: a large party like the CPC with a membership of more than 63 million, the key to strong or weak cohesion, combat effectiveness and appeal lies in the quality of Party members. If a Party member has no political belief and no basic knowledge of Marxism, and he or she joins the Party only with the aim to get an official position, then, such a Party member can only discredit the CPC and tarnish its image.
People are the sources of our Party's strength and the foundation of our Party's life, that is the viewpoint repeatedly stressed by elderly Lu. At the very beginning of the establishment of the Party, it was explicitly stated that there shouldn't be the least private interest with the exception of the interest of the people. The Party was in the extremely harsh environment during revolutionary war years, why could it gain the heartfelt support from the broad masses of the people? Because, no matter how difficult the situation of the Party was, it would try all possible means to concern itself with the production and life of the people, trying to solve all the problems for the people and serve the people heart and soul. Now, we are enjoying better conditions and have abundant materials, however, some Party-member cadres have cast away the glorious tradition and fine style of work of the Party, they have forgot the purpose of the Party, this is quite dangerous.
These words of elderly Lu reflect the aspiration of a genuine member of the CPC, and give one an unforgettable impression.
