Top Philippine General Dies in Plane Crash

A Philippine air force plane carrying 14 people crashed into the sea off the western province of Palawan Sunday, killing a top general and as many as 12 others. One foreigner, identified as Bruce Walker and believed to be an American, was rescued by fishermen near the crash site and brought to a hospital on Cagayancillo island, navy Commodore Rodolfo Rabago. The nine-seat Nomad propeller plane went down apparently because of engine trouble after taking off from Cagayancillo en route to the Palawan capital of Puerto Princesa, 360 miles southwest of Manila. The pilot sensed something was wrong with the engine and turned back, but the propeller stopped as the plane circled the airport and the aircraft fell into the sea.
