Better Law Enforcement for Fishing
China will enhance protection of its fishery resources and ecological environment through better implementation of the existing Fishery Law.
Vice-Minister of Agriculture Qi Jingfa made the commitment Sunday during a report on enforcement of the Fishery Law to members of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).
The Fishery Law was passed by the Sixth NPC Standing Committee in January of 1986 and took effect in July that year.
The law put top priority on directing the fishery industry towards increased breeding instead of fishing to protect and make better use of the country's fishery resources.
"We are trying to keep a sustainable development of the fishery resources through adjusting the structure of the fishery industry," Qi said.
He said the output of farm-bred aquatic products account for 58 per cent of the total output of aquatic products, raising from 44 per cent in 1986.
The ministry has taken tougher measures to curb abuses in the fishing industry.
China has banned fishing between June and September since 1995 with the approval of the State Council.
The Ministry of Agriculture set up a goal of zero growth in sea fishing last year to remedy the harm done to fishery resources because of excessive sea fishing in some places, according to the vice-minister.
The goal was accomplished last year and the sea fishing product output has decreased in the first half of this year, Qi said.
