CPPCC Chairman Meets Central American Parliament Delegation

CPPCC chairman meets Central American Parliament delegation
Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met Sunday with a delegation from the Central American Parliament, headed by its Vice-President Rodrigo Samayoa Rivas.

Li, also a standing committee member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said that although China and the Central American countries are far apart geographically, they have a long history of exchanges, adding that the Chinese people have friendly sentiments toward the people of the Central American countries.

Calling the Central American Parliament an influential regional political organization, Li said that he hoped the delegation members would learn more about China during their trip.

He said that promoting mutual understanding will be conducive to enhancing friendship and mapping out policies, adding that it is necessary to learn about the current situation in China as well as its past.

He said that China's most important policies center on economic development, improving the people's standard of living, speeding up the reform and opening up and stabilizing the society. He noted that these hard-won policies are the result of a strategic decision made by the CPC after years of exploration and summary, and China's development is closely connected with these guidelines.

China and the Central American countries have not yet established diplomatic relations due to a specific reason, he said, adding that China pursues a clear-cut, firm and consistent stance on the Taiwan issue. Taiwan, he stressed, is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and China's basic policy for solving the issue is peaceful reunification and ``one country, two systems." Any form of separatist attempts, including ``two Chinas" and ``one China, one Taiwan," is firmly opposed by the Chinese government and people.

Samayoa, whose delegation is here at the invitation of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, said that the China trip is providing a good opportunity for the delegation members to gain a better understanding of China and its governmental system. Moreover, he said, the entire delegation admires China's achievements.

Other members of the delegation said that they hoped to explore ways of bringing the Chinese and Central American peoples closer, so as to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.
