Romania Not to Have Official Relations with Taiwan: Foreign Ministry
Romania, in an effort to deny media reports on alleged contacts with Taiwan, said Saturday that it does not intend to enter into official relations with Taiwan.
"Romanian state institutions neither keep contacts nor engage in any talks with the Taipei authorities," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ireny Comaroschi said in a statement released to the press.
Earlier, some international news agencies reported that a newspaper in Taiwan had alleged that "A country in Southern Europe is secretly negotiating the establishment of diplomatic relations with Taiwan," speculating that "Romania would be among the three southeast European states ... that show special interest in Taiwan."
"The Romanian Foreign Ministry pointed to the absurd and totally untrue nature of this piece of information and recalls its official stand: Romania recognizes the existence of only one China-- the People's Republic of China -- and considers that the Beijing administration is the only legitimate government of the whole country," the statement said.
"Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory, with the dispute between Beijing and Taipei being a domestic matter," it said.
