Cambodian PM Reiterates "One China" Policy

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen Saturday reiterated the country's "one China" policy.

Meeting with Wang Guangying, vice president of the National People's Congress of China, Hun Sen said the upholding of the "one China" policy has been the consistent position of Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk and that both parliament and the government of the country will never change this position.

Hun Sen pointed out that China's prosperity and powerfulness will help maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world.

He spoke highly of the Chinese government's stand of stabilizing its currency during the period of the Asian financial crisis in 1997, saying that the act had helped speed up the recovery of the Asian economy.

Hun Sen said that the Cambodia-China friendship has a long history. "We will not only cherish the friendship established by leaders of the older generation but also strengthen and further develop this friendship," he said.

Hun Sen said his government encourages Chinese companies to invest in Cambodia, especially in the field of agriculture, and welcomes Chinese tourists to come to his country.

During the meeting, Wang praised Cambodian government's achievements in maintaining national sovereignty and developing economy in recent years.

Wang and her party left for Hong Kong Saturday morning at the end of her five-day visit.
