Shanghai Railway System Ready for Peak Travel Period

The railway system in Shanghai, China's largest economic and financial center, is prepared for this summer's peak travel season, which starts Saturday and ends August 31.

The Shanghai Railway Bureau estimated that the city's rails will carry 26 million passengers during the period, 1.7 million more than the same period of 1999.

The bureau has formed a group to be responsible for safe and punctual delivery of passengers.

Between July 1 and August 31, six temporary trains from Shanghai to Dalian, Nanjing and Fuzhou will be added to the schedule. And additional trains from Shanghai to Beijing and Jinan will also be put on the list when needed.

Summer is the fourth travel peak period in China following the Spring Festival in February, the Tomb-Sweeping Festival in April and the May Day holiday.

An increasing number of students are traveling to and from eastern China during summer vacation, as colleges and universities in the area have admitted more students from other parts of the country in the past two years.
