The German telecommunications giant, Deutsche Telekom, is carrying out "serious discussions on a total merger" with Sprint Corp. of the
United States
, the Die Welt newspaper was to report Sunday in Berlin.
The deal is to take the form of an exchange of stock, the newspaper said, quoting sources close to the negotiations.
The Wall Street Journal Europe on Thursday said that Deutsche Telekom was taking a close look at Sprint and had discussed both the US company and other potential US targets during a management board meeting on Wednesday.
Deutsche Telekom refused to comment on the report. It already holds 10 percent of Sprint and has previously discussed buying the company.
