China to Develop Smoother Ties with Thailand

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Friday that the traditional friendly relations between China and Thailand will continuously develop in the new century through joint efforts of the two countries.

In a congratulatory message to Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which falls on July 1, Zhu said substantial achievements have been scored in all aspects of cooperation between the two countries over the last 25 years.

Sino-Thai relations have become a model for countries pursuing different social systems to co-exist peacefully on the basis of mutually beneficial cooperation.

To further strengthen bilateral cooperation in an all-round way is in line with the common aspirations of the two peoples, he said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan also sent a congratulatory message to Thai Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan, expressing the hope that Sino-Thai relations will further develop in the orientation set in the China-Thailand Joint Statement signed last year.

The successful state visit to Thailand by Chinese President Jiang Zemin last year, Tang said, has laid a firm foundation for a sound and stable development of Sino-Thai relations in the new century.
