China's Meteorological Satellite Operates Smoothly

The Fengyun 2 meteorological satellite launched Sunday by a Long March 3 carrier rocket was operating smoothly.

It is in the process of positioning, sources from the Shanghai Aerospace Administration said Friday.

This is China's second geostationary meteorological satellite.

The Fengyun 2, to be positioned in a geostationary orbit over 105 degrees east longitude, can provide meteorological information such as cloud maps, temperatures, and wind movements over China and its neighbors.

The Fengyun 2 satellite was jointly developed by the Shanghai Aerospace Technology Research Institute under the China Aerospace Corporation, the Chinese Research Institute of Space Technology and several other research institutes.
