Solomons Opposition Leader Sogavare Elected New PM
Solomon Islands opposition leader Mannasseh Sogavare was elected the new prime minister on Friday and swore to form a government of national unity in the strife-torn South Pacific nation.
Sogavare replaces ousted prime minister Bartholomew Ulufa'alu, who stood down after a June 5 attempted coup in which one of two warring ethnic militias briefly took control of the capital and sparked fierce jungle fighting.
"We are committed to bringing Solomon Islands to a national unity and reconciliation government," Sogavare told parliament in the capital Honiara after he won an emergency vote 23-21.
