HK Local Graduates Perform Quite Favorably: Survey
Results of a comprehensive survey show that the overall performance of local first-degree graduates of Hong Kong as assessed by employers is quite favorable.
Aimed at obtaining opinions of employers on the quality of the 1998 first-degree graduates of the seven University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded institutions, the survey is conducted by a government-commissioned consultant.
A sample size of 4,565 graduates employed in 3,063 companies and organizations, including government departments, was selected for the just-completed first-year survey.
The survey questionnaire has been so designed as to capture information on eight aspects of performance, with each aspect being measured by a number of attributes. The eight aspects are: Chinese Language Proficiency, English Language Proficiency, Numerical Competency, Information Technology Literacy, Analytical and Problem-solving Abilities, Work Attitude, Inter-personal Skills, and Management Skills.
The assessment on an aspect of performance is measured by a score on a five-point scale. A score of 3 denotes generally meets the employers' required standard.
Out of the sample of 4,565 graduates, 2,017 valid questionnaires were received, representing a response rate of 50.3 percent.
Results of the survey show that the overall performance of the graduates was quite favorable, being 3.46. Fourteen percent of the graduates received a rating above 4, implying that their performance sometimes or always exceeds the employers' required standard.
