City Residents Aware of Water ScarcityA survey shows that more than 80 percent of residents in Beijing have adopted water saving measures, "China Daily" reported.The survey, conducted by Beijing-based Mainland Investigation Company, says 95 percent of Beijing residents know the capital is suffering from a serious shortage of water reserves. Beijing has long suffered water scarcity and water sources per capita in Beijing are 300 cubic meters, one eighth of the nation's average and 1/32 of the world's average. Currently, each household in Beijing consumes an average of 9.3 cubic meters of water per months. Among those interviewed, 35.6 percent said they use less than 8 cubic meters per capita per month. The standard rate of water consumption in Beijing is 2.6 cubic meters per month per capita. And 58.2 percent of those surveyed said that they use water according to the standard. The survey also found each household in Beijing pays an average of 15 yuan (1.8 U.S. dollars) for monthly water fees. |
