Singapore Chinese Dailies Set to Take on New Look

Singapore's three major Chinese dailies will unveil on July 7 new designs and new editions to their readers, Singapore Press Holdings officially announced Friday.

Lianhe Zaobao, the largest local Chinese daily, will be elegantly packaged with larger photos and streamlined words to cater to the needs of the young and busy white-collars.

Chew Keng Juea, senior executive vice president of Singapore Press Holdings, said the redesigned Lianhe Zaobao will be aesthetically"fresh and modern with a new masthead and visual pages."

"Editorial-wise, stories will be shorter, sharper and reader- friendly.There will be a section -- ZB Business-- devoted to local, regional and East Asian business news and analyses," Chew said.

In the meantime, Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News will launch their afternoon editions, designed to facilitate people's reading needs during lunch time

"Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News will launch their afternoon editions on July 7, 2000. There will be at least 40 percent difference in content between the afternoon and evening editions," Chew said.

With the launch of the new measures, the three Chinese dailies will be able to provide readers with round-the-clock news coverage, he said.

The combined reach of the three Chinese dailies is currently 1. 7 million readers with a combined circulation of more than 470,000.
