Returned Chinese Students Play Major Role in ShanghaiChinese students who returned from abroad are now playing an increasingly important role in boosting scientific and economic development in Shanghai.The 18,000 returned students, aged 35 on average, studied in the United States, Japan, Britain, France, Canada and several other countries. Official figures indicate that returned students have taken all seven seats for chief scientists and made up more than half of the number of academicians with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering in Shanghai. Chen Zhu, who got a Ph. D. in France, is now director of the Shanghai Human Gene Research Center, which is in the forefront in human gene research in the world. Besides, returned students have established more than 900 businesses, with combined investments of 200 million U.S. dollars. Most of the businesses belong to sectors of new and high-tech industries, such as information technology and bio-pharmaceuticals. Shanghai has set up five industrial zones and a start-up incubation center for returned students over the past decade. |
