The vast increases in the number of tourists on May Day holidays allowed travel agencies and other businesses to profit greatly, but on the other hand, raiseed quite a number of problems in tourist industry. The question is, how can we promote the beneficial and abolish the harmful?

China hopes to stimulate the development of the tourist industry and other related industries during the coming holidays and to improve available services.

The General Office of the State Council published the document on how to further develop tourism and solve the problems caused by holidays with the assistance of nine ministries, including the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), the State Development Planning Commission and the State Economic and Trade Commission.

The document ordered relevant government departments to guarantee the safety of transportation for tourists and try their best to make their holidays as successful as possible.

The departments of railways, communications and civil aviation are required to make out transportation programmes and prepare vehicles and aeroplanes for emergency use.

Tourism administrations at all levels will open hotlines to receive and handle complaints from tourists and protect their legislative interests.

The CNTA will enhance its supervision of quality and prices within the tourist industry. It will severely punish people and companies who cheat tourists.

The State Statistics Bureau and the CNTA will set up a statistics and forecast system that tourists can access for information via the media. Measures will be taken to alleviate the undersupply of hotels and inns.
