Guangzhou-HK Optical Network Operational

The second-phase optical network linking 10 cities in south China's Guangdong province, including Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with Hong Kong, became operational Thursday.

Early this year China Telecom invested 60-million yuan (7.2 million US dollars) for the optical project.

The network is aimed to substantially improve the long-distance telephone capacity between Guangdong Province and the international metropolis of Hong Kong.

The optical network with a bandwidth of 15GB can allow 360,000 people to make calls simultaneously. The 1,095 km long optical fiber can also accommodate new telecom services, such as ATM network and IP.
