HK Wishes to Expand Trade With Spain, Tung

There is much room for the expansion of bilateral trade between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Spain, SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said Thursday.

Addressing a banquet held in honor of visiting Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, Tung said bilateral trade between Hong Kong amounted to US$ 1.8 billion in 1999.

"I am sure there is a lot more room for expansion," he said. He welcomed "more Spanish companies to invest or locate their operations in Hong Kong."

Since within two days' time Hong Kong will celebrate the third anniversary of its return to the motherland, Tung said he hoped the Spanish prime minister will be able to see how Hong Kong "is moving ahead confidently and proudly" under the unique concept of "One Country, Two Systems."In the past three years, Hong Kong people have been successfully running Hong Kong under the unprecedented concept of "One Country, Two Systems" with a high degree of autonomy as stipulated in the Basic Law, Tung said.

The Spanish prime minister arrived in Hong Kong Wednesday evening following a visit to the Chinese mainland.
