China to Reform Drug Rehabilitation Centers

The Ministry of Public Security published Thursday a circular ordering to reform drug rehabilitation centers and close down those that have been opened without official permission.

According to the circular, the ministry will close down drug rehabilitation centers that are not run by public security departments.

Reforms are aimed at standardizing the operation of drug rehabilitation centers in accordance with the law, said Zhang Weihang, director of the ministry's department in charge of detention and drug rehabilitation centers.

China has over 700 drug rehabilitation centers and 681,000 registered drug addicts. Between 1991-99, over 900,000 drug addicts have stopped taking drugs.
