China-related Act in US Senate Strongly OpposedChina on Thursday voiced strong dissatisfaction with and opposition to the China Non-proliferation Act put forward by several US senators, denouncing it as wantonly attacking and slandering the country. When asked to comment on the issue that the US Senate would on July 10 discuss and vote on the act, which also includes certain retaliatory measures, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao pointed out in Beijing that China has actually made great contributions to the global non-proliferation cause. China has always opposed the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and has exercised strict and effective control over related articles according to its policies on military trade and non-proliferation as well as related international commitments, he said. However, the spokesman pointed out, certain US senators, who are prejudiced and hostile toward China, cling to the Cold War mentality and are trying to turn the act into law so as to block the development and improvement of Sino-US relations. Their actions, which totally disregard China's sincere efforts in non-proliferation, go against the basic norms of international relations, and their motives are highly suspect, Zhu said. China urges the US Senate not to discuss and vote on this act, which interferes in China's internal affairs, Zhu said. China also demands that the US Government oppose the act and immediately take practical measures to stop it from becoming law, so that no new obstacle gets in the way of advancement of bilateral relations, he emphasized. |
