Textile Exports to Japan, HK SurgeAn improving world economy and favourable government policies have helped increase China's textile and garment exports. In the first four months of this year, China's textile and garment exports surged 42.3 per cent compared to last year to reach US$15.1 billion, according to statistics from the General Administration of Customs (GAC). China's exports to all major trade partners, including Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, South Korea, Germany and Australia, saw reasonable rises in the first four months, said an official from the State Textile Industry Bureau. He credited Hong Kong and Japan especially for the boom in the Chinese mainland's textile and garment exports. Exports to Hong Kong and Japan accounted for about one-half of China's total textile and garment exports, he said. In the period, China sold US$3.8 billion worth of textile products to Japan, up 35.9 per cent from the same period last year. The Chinese mainland's textile and garment exports to Hong Kong rose 44.29 per cent to US$3.6 billion in January-April, according to GAC. Garment exports to Hong Kong stood out with an increase of 62.31 per cent or US$2.2 billion, noted the official. However in the January-April period, the proportion of the mainland's textile and garment exports to Hong Kong out of the country's total decreased 2.3 percentage points from the same period last year, sources said. The official said although Hong Kong still has a decisive say on the whole of mainland's textile and garment exports, it's losing its past power. The mainland is diversifying its textile and garment trade partners, he said. The official added that the mainland's exports of all major textile products and garments have turned around the declining trend in the first four months. But he does not expect the rapid increases to last long. The increase will slow down in the second quarter of this year with a high comparative basis, anticipated rising material prices and alleviation in the effects of the government's supportive policies. |
