'Internet 1.2 Billion' IT Popularization Project Starts in Beijing

The general public's extensive participation is one of the characteristics of the IT Age and without the participation of the common people, there will be no future for the Internet of China.

The "Internet 1.2 Billion", which aims to link internet closely with the daily life of the masses and create an Internet era truly belonging to the masses, was launched in Beijing on June 28.

It's learned that although the number of Chinese internet users has exceeded 10 million, this proportion is less than 1 percent of China's total population and they are concentrated in several large cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Experts think that IT popularization will take three stages to accomplish: the stage of elementary education, the stage of low-cost technology allocation and the stage of all-round application and popularization. Five years, 10 years and 15 years are required respectively for the three stages.
