China Helps Resettle Herdsmen

More than 10,000 poor Tajik herdsmen living in Pamir Plateau area will move to areas with better living conditions in the next five years.

With the help of a poverty-relief project initiated by the government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, these herdsmen will be resettled in the Yopurga County.

These herdsmen now lives in Taxkorgan county in the eastern part of the Pamir Plateau. With hostile environment, 75 percent of the county's 32,000 people are in extreme poverty.

The resettlement is expected to help the herdsmen out of poverty and improve the ecological environment of the Pamir Plateau, a local official said.

There are 550,000 poverty-stricken people in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, most of them living in remote mountainous region. Prior to the project, some trial work has been done in Hami, another area in eastern part of Xinjiang.

"We are considering to help more people out of poverty through resettlement," said the official.
