China Beat Canada 3-2 to Qualify for Semi-finals

Zhang Ouying scored two goals as China beat Canada 3-2 in the second game of a Women's Gold Cup 2000 doubleheader at Hersheypark Stadium.

Mexico beat Guatemala 7-0 in the opening game on Monday night.

China (2-0) scored twice in the first nine minutes. Pan Lina converted a nice through ball from Pu Wei in the sixth minute. Zhang made it 2-0 three minutes later, finishing a breakaway by sliding a shot past Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. Pu started the play with a header.

Canada (1-1) scored in the 31st minute when Charmaine Hooper slipped the first of her two goals past China's Han Wenxia.

China's lead was restored to two goals moments later, however, when Zhang, off a one-touch pass from Pan, beat LeBlanc from about eight yards out.

Hooper capped the scoring on a penalty kick in the 50th minute.

China, which claimed a berth in Saturday's semifinals with its victory over Canada, will wrap up preliminary round play on tonight in Louisville, Kentucky, against Mexico.

Canada will play Guatemala in the other game of that doubleheader, and a win would advance it into the semifinals.

The United States and Brazil are both unbeaten in two games and have clinched semifinal berths from the other group.

Brazil and the United States play today in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The semifinals are on Saturday in Louisville, and the championship game is on July 3 in Foxboro.

In the first game of Monday's doubleheader, Iris Mora scored four goals and Maribel Dominguez added three for Mexico (1-1).

Dominguez scored the only first-half goal for Mexico, connecting off the dribble in the 10th minute after Gina Oceguera's cross from the left flank.
