A charter jet carrying Elian Gonzalez and his entourage landed in Havana, Cuba, at 7:45 p.m. ET Wednesday, less than four hours after an injunction keeping him in the United States expired. Elian was greeted by a cheering crowd at the airport. Afterwards, the boy and his father were driven to an undisclosed location, where they will remain for approximately one hour before going to a house that has been designated for the family. Earlier, the boy's father, Juan Miguel, thanked the U.S. government during a brief statement on the runway at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. ''We've made a lot of really nice friends and we appreciate your humanity and your kindness and your warmth and understanding to me and my family in a period that has been difficult for us,'' he said in Spanish. ''I am extremely happy to be leaving.'' The Supreme Court cleared the way Wednesday for Elian's return, ending a protracted international custody battle over the little boy.
