Jiang Hails Completion of Mapping of Genetic Code

President Jiang Zemin hailed the recent completion of the first working draft of the human genome map in a speech Wednesday to a working conference in Beijing of the Communist Party of China.

Jiang called the Human Genome Project "a great scientific project in the scientific history of human beings, and one of vital importance to the development of life sciences, medicine and pharmaceutical study."

The completion of the working draft is a milestone in the overall process of the Human Genome Project, said Jiang, adding that it is the result of the teamwork of scientists all over the world.

The achievement is a common wealth of all human beings and should bring benefit to all, Jiang said.

Jiang congratulated all the scientists and technical staff involved in the public project, and thanked the paticipating Chinese scientists for their hard work.

Jiang said he expects Chinese scientists to make further contributions to the completion of human genome mapping and to China's scientific genome research as well.

The publicly-funded Human Genome Project is an international effort involving the US, Britain, Japan, Germany, France and China. The scientists announced Monday that the first working draft of the human genome map has been virtually completed.
