Chinese Scientists Join in Mapping Human GenomeChinese scientists played an important role in mapping the rough draft of the just-announced human genetic code, known as the human genome. They hope to be able to use the new data in the biochemical industry.More than two hundred Chinese scientists spent nine months sequencing the genome region of the third chromosome. And, that work's been a crucial part of the total project to complete the working draft of the human genome. Doctor Zhang Meng, from the Human Genome Center of the China Academy of Sciences explains what it means for science in China. Zhang Meng says this shows that bio-technology in China is at a top international level. The scientists' work will have a profound impact on biology and industries with genetics at the core. He says the next step will be to map a complete draft of the human genome. More work will be done, for example, studying the genetic code of Chinese people, and how the genetic structure of a Asian person differs to that of a white or black person. Similar sequencing will also be used in hybrid crop research. And, while people are talking about the incredible possibilities of this breakthrough technology for treating diseases, many are concerned it might be used for discrimination. The responsibility to use this powerful knowledge wisely is crucial. Doctor Zhang Meng says there are huge ethical, legal and social implications that need considering. |
